- Senior Managing Director, Equities
Karen Frank is Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Equities. The Equities team manages $47 billion in net assets, including a portfolio of more than 60 private companies, significant investments in public companies, and relationships with more than 30 private equity funds. Karen will be based in London, where she has been living for over 20 years.
Prior to joining Ontario Teachers’, Karen was CEO of Barclays Global Private Bank, and sat on Barclays International Executive Committee. She joined Barclays in 2012 and was Co-Head of the European Financial Sponsors group before taking responsibility for the Private Bank.
Karen started her career in private equity in 1992, working in Goldman Sachs’ Principal Investment Area in New York and London, and continued working in private equity with AEA Investors and Compass Partners International. In 2005, Karen rejoined Goldman Sachs’ to build the firm’s middle market Financial Sponsors business.
She earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Economics.
- Managing Director, High Conviction Equities
Igor Bekker joined Ontario Teachers' in 2005 and is part of High Conviction Equities. He currently leads a team of investment professionals that manage a number of active equities programs. Igor is a lead portfolio manager on the Serial Compounders program, Ontario Teachers’ public long-term equities platform that seeks to invest in companies that consistently deliver excess returns on capital sourced from a truly idiosyncratic, difficult to replicate feature of the business.
Prior to joining Ontario Teachers', Igor spent five years in the research department of BMO Nesbitt Burns, covering North American Telecommunications.
Igor earned a BBA (Honours) from York University's Schulich School of Business and an MBA from Queen's University. He is a CFA charterholder and a graduate of the Ivey Business School Leadership program.
- Managing Director, Teachers’ Innovation Platform & High Conviction Equities (London)
Maggie Fanari is based in London and heads the High Conviction Equities (formerly Relationship Investing) team's direct equities investments for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. She is also responsible for supporting the build of the global strategy for Teachers’ Innovation Platform (TIP) and the execution of that strategy in EMEA.
Maggie has been with Ontario Teachers' since 2006 and was based in Toronto until moving to London in 2015. Maggie has structured and executed on large-scale, partnership-driven minority investments in both public and private companies in multiple sectors globally. She started her career as an auditor at KPMG and previously worked in equity research at Scotia Capital.
Maggie is a Chartered Accountant and a CFA charterholder. She also holds a BBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University and ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
- Managing Director & Global Group Sector Head, Private Capital
Bogdan Cenanovic leads Ontario Teachers' investing activities in the technology, media and telecom (TMT), financial services and healthcare sectors. He joined Private Capital in 2009 and has nearly two decades of private equity and investment banking experience.
Since joining the organization, he has been involved in a number of significant transactions including Ascend Learning, Blue Coat Systems, Canbriam Energy, CareerBuilder, Compass Datacenters, Datapipe, Fleet Complete, Flexera Software, Hawkwood Energy, Insight Pharmaceuticals, Kanetix, Metronode, Riverbed Technology and TierPoint. He currently sits on the boards of Amica Senior Lifestyles, Canada Guaranty Mortgage Insurance, Fleet Complete, Flexera Software and TierPoint.
Bogdan was previously a principal at TorQuest Partners and prior to that, a vice-president at EdgeStone Capital Partners, where he was responsible for sourcing and executing investments, as well as monitoring and providing strategic guidance to portfolio companies. Earlier in his career he worked as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
Bogdan is a graduate of the Honours Business Administration and MBA programs at the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University. Additionally, he holds the ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
- Managing Director and Global Group Sector Head
Romeo Leemrijse leads Ontario Teachers' investing activities in the diversified industrial and business services, consumer and retail as well as the energy sectors. He joined Private Capital in 2006 and has more than 25 years of private equity and investment banking experience.
Since joining the organization, he has been involved in a number of significant transactions including PODS, GFL, Aethon Energy, CSC, Shearers, Hawkwood Energy, Dematic, Insight Pharmaceuticals, GNC and Serta Simmons Bedding. He currently sits on the boards of PODS, CSC, Serta Simmons Bedding and Aethon Energy.
Romeo was previously a principal at EdgeStone Capital Partners, where he was responsible for sourcing and executing investments, as well as monitoring and providing strategic guidance to portfolio companies. Earlier in his career he worked as an investment banker at CIBC.
Romeo is a CFA charterholder and graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Additionally, he holds the ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
- Managing Director, Global Funds
Tanya Carmichael is based in Toronto and leads the Global Funds team for Ontario Teachers'. She has extensive experience in private equity fund investing and represents Ontario Teachers' on numerous limited partner advisory committees.
Tanya has previously served as Chair of the Institutional Limited Partners Association (ILPA) board of directors and on the Private Equity Steering Committee of the Principles of Responsible Investment.
Before joining Ontario Teachers' in 2006, she was an executive director in CIBC World Markets' private equity funds group and also worked in the legal and compliance group at CIBC. Tanya articled at Stikeman Elliott in Toronto.
Tanya received a BA (Honours) from Queen's University and an LLB from Western University. She holds the ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
- Managing Director, Direct Investing, Private Capital (London)
Jean-Charles Douin is based in London and leads Private Capital's activities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He joined Ontario Teachers' in 2008 and has over 15 years of private equity experience.
Since joining the organization he has been involved in a number of European buyouts led by the London office including Busy Bees, Helly Hansen, ISS, Memora and OGF. Jean-Charles has served on a number of boards across Europe and Africa and currently sits on the boards of Burton's Biscuits and Busy Bees in the U.K., Memora in Spain and OGF in France.
Previously, Jean-Charles worked at CapVest, a pan-European mid-cap private equity fund active in the food, consumer goods and healthcare sectors, and UBS Investment Bank, where he focused on M&A deals in the consumer and retail sectors.
Jean-Charles graduated from HEC (École des hautes études commerciales), in Paris and earned an MBA from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.
- Managing Director, Direct Investing, Private Capital (Hong Kong)
Raju Ruparelia leads Ontario Teachers’ direct private equity investing activities across Asia-Pacific. Raju joined Ontario Teachers’ in 2008, was a senior founding member of its Hong Kong office in 2013 and has nearly two decades of combined experience in private equity and corporate finance. He has worked in both Toronto and London for the organization and has been involved in a number of its direct investments, including the acquisitions of Spandana Sphoorty Financial Ltd., INC Research, Coway, DTZ and Cushman & Wakefield. Raju currently sits on the board of Cushman & Wakefield.
Prior to joining Ontario Teachers’, Raju worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse in New York, in investments at Cadillac Fairview (Ontario Teachers’ wholly owned real estate subsidiary) and in the corporate finance group at Deloitte.
Raju holds a BA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
- Managing Director, Portfolio Management
Harj Shoan is based in Toronto and leads Private Capital’s Portfolio Management practice, which focuses on value creation planning, value lever acceleration, talent management, board effectiveness, and sharing of best practices across the direct investment portfolio. Prior to joining the Portfolio Management team, Harj was a member of the Consumer & Retail direct investing team in Private Capital, and currently sits on the boards of Arterra Wines Canada, Shearer's Snacks, Traeger Grills, and Munchkin.
Harj joined Ontario Teachers’ in 2014 and has nearly two decades of private equity, investment banking and corporate finance experience. He previously worked at Imperial Capital, Morgan Stanley Private Equity (U.K.), Shoppers Drug Mart, and BMO Nesbitt Burns.
Harj holds an MBA from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is also a CFA charterholder.
