William Butt Appointed to Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan’s Board

Steve McGirr, the Chair of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan’s board, is pleased to announce the appointment of William (Bill) Butt to the board for a three-year term, commencing January 1, 2026. Mr. Butt was appointed by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, one of the Plan’s two sponsors. He will replace Patti Croft, who re-joined the board on an interim basis in April 2025 to replace Minister Tim Hodgson, who left the board to pursue federal office.

“We look forward to welcoming Bill to the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan board. With over 20 years of leadership in financial services and over a decade of experience on boards spanning pensions, financial services and telecommunications, he is well-positioned to make a meaningful contribution to the Plan,” said Mr. McGirr.

Mr. Butt spent many years with BMO Financial Group, most recently as Global Head of Investment & Corporate Banking, where he was responsible for all of BMO’s business with major corporations worldwide. More recently he has served on the boards of CI Financial, where he is the company’s Lead Director and the Chair of its Audit & Risk Committee, and the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada.  He is also a Board member and Chair of the Investment Committee at OMERS Administration Corporation, a position he will be retiring from at the end of the year.

He holds a BComm (University of Windsor), MBA (Ivey Business School), ICD.D (Institute of Corporate Directors) and studied at the Rotterdam Graduate School of Management.

“I would also like to thank Patti Croft for her many contributions since re-joining the board earlier this year and wish her well in her retirement,” added Mr. McGirr.
