A pension plan was created for Ontario teachers in 1917. Until 1990, the plan was sponsored by the Ontario government and fund assets were invested in Government of Ontario debentures.

In 1990, the government created the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board to administer pension benefits, invest plan assets and report on the plan’s funding status.
