Donations from more than 150 friends and colleagues will establish the Robert Bertram Doctoral Research Award at the soon-to-be-launched Canadian Foundation for Governance Research (CFGR). Established by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), the Foundation will match the investment income earned from the endowment on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

On Tuesday afternoon we learned of fraudulent behaviour by an individual visiting our premises. We immediately alerted the police. An individual was arrested by the police and has been charged. No Teachers’ staff member was involved in the fraudulent behavior. We have reviewed our security procedures in relation to this situation and we believe that no Teachers’ funds are involved.

Jim Leech, President and CEO, today announced that Robert Bertram will retire as Executive Vice-President, Investments and Chief Investment Officer of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Teachers’) at the end of 2008. Neil Petroff, currently Group Senior Vice-President, Investments, has been appointed his successor, effective January 1, 2009.

Teachers’ Private Capital, the private investment arm of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Teachers’), has entered into a definitive purchase agreement to acquire U.S.-based Aquilex Holdings, LLC (Aquilex) from Harvest Partners, a private investment firm. The transaction is scheduled to close in December and is subject to regulatory approvals.

The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (Teachers') and Morgan Stanley Infrastructure (MSI) have completed the transaction to jointly acquire SAESA Group (SAESA), a Chilean electricity distribution, transmission and generation company from Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) for a purchase price of US$887 million. Under the agreement announced with PSEG on June 17, Teachers’ and MSI each own 50% of the company and have assumed approximately US$400 million in existing company debt. On behalf of the consortium, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan CEO Jim Leech today stated "We are pleased with the Supreme Court's decision and are continuing to work to complete an acquisition of BCE."

Morgan Stanley Infrastructure (MSI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement to jointly acquire SAESA Group (SAESA), a Chilean electric distribution, transmission and generation unit of Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) for a purchase price of approximately US$870 million. Teachers' and MSI will also assume more than $400 million in existing company debt. Ownership of the US$1.3 billion enterprise will be shared equally.  Español

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Teachers’) has again beaten its composite benchmark, earning a 4.5% annual rate of return, compared to the composite benchmark’s 2.3% return. This translates into $2.3 billion in value added above benchmark and brings the fund’s total value, as of December 31, 2007, to $108.5 billion.
