Steve Faraone
Vice-President

Steve Faraone is responsible for private equity investments in the financial services and healthcare sectors. Since joining Teachers’ in 2002, he has worked on a number of transactions, including the acquisitions of Alliance Laundry Systems, Canada Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company, GCAN Insurance Company and Yellow Pages Group. Steve serves on the boards of Canada Guaranty, NXT Capital and Alliance Laundry.

Previously, Steve spent two years with BMO Nesbitt Burns Equity Partners, the private equity arm of the Bank of Montreal and prior to that was with BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment & Corporate Banking division in Vancouver.

A CFA charterholder, he received a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours Finance) from the University of British Columbia, has completed the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

 

Michael Murray
Director

Michael Murray joined Teachers’ in 2005 and has participated in investments in Education Management Corporation, GCAN Insurance and Canada Guaranty. He serves on the boards for GCAN and Canada Guaranty. Previously, he was a consultant with Bain & Company, focusing on strategy development, profit improvement and M&A engagements. During his tenure at Bain, Michael developed expertise in asset and wealth management, retail banking and insurance through numerous engagements with North American financial services clients. Michael was also a senior director of corporate development at Delano Technology Corporation in Toronto.

Michael received a Bachelor of Commerce degree (First Class Honours) from Queen’s University, and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth where he graduated as an Edward Tuck Scholar with High Distinction.

 

Terry Woodward
Director

Terry Woodward is responsible for the venture capital portfolio at Teachers’ Private Capital. He also manages the fund’s private equity transactions in the healthcare sector. Terry joined Teachers’ in 2001 with more than 10 years of experience in the biotechnology sector, including basic and applied research, clinical development and corporate development. He has led a number of significant venture capital transactions including Eyetech, Ista, Portola, Cardiokine, Tethys and Cempra.

Before joining Teachers’, Terry led corporate development at a private Michigan-based medical diagnostic company. He also led research and clinical development at a private company in Michigan.

Terry holds a PhD from McGill University and an MBA from Michigan State University, and has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University since 2000.

 

Chris Ferrara
Portfolio Manager
Chris Ferrara joined Teachers’ in 2006 and has since been involved with a number of Teachers’ portfolio companies, including CTVglobemedia, Avaya Inc. and Grupo Corporativo Ono as an observer to the board. Previously, Chris spent eight years with Celestica Inc. where he worked in the mergers and acquisitions group. Most recently, he was vice-president of corporate development responsible for sourcing, structuring and negotiating deals globally, particularly for Japan and South East Asia. Chris has also worked in the Canadian mid-market providing privately owned companies with strategic, divestiture and capital markets advice.

Chris holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree and an MBA from the University of Toronto (Rotman). He is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Business Valuator.

 

Greg Nielsen
Portfolio Manager

Greg Nielsen joined Teachers’ in 2007. He was involved in the Canada Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company (Canada Guaranty) investment and is currently an observer on the boards of GCAN Insurance and Canada Guaranty. Previously, he worked in the mergers and acquisitions group at TD Securities and the corporate lending division at Canadian Western Bank.

Greg received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and an MBA (Honours) from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

 

Greg Mashinter
Assistant Portfolio Manager

Greg Mashinter joined Teachers’ Private Capital in 2006. He has been involved in a number of transactions, including TPC's acquisition of Arclin and Canada Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company, TPC's growth equity commitment to NXT Capital, INC Research's acquisition of Kendle International, CTVglobemedia’s acquisition of CHUM, and the sale of GCAN Insurance to RSA Canada. Greg earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (Honours with Distinction) from the Schulich School of Business at York University, and is a CFA charterholder.

 

Ying Soong
Senior Investment Associate
Ying Soong has been involved in Teachers’ investments in Alliance Laundry Systems and Avaya. Prior to joining the team in 2007, she worked at AIG Financial Products and JP Morgan. Ying earned a BA from Wellesley College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
 

Jonathan Sue
Senior Investment Analyst

Jonathan Sue joined Teachers' Private Capital in 2012. He previously worked in the transaction services group at Deloitte & Touche.

Jonathan is a Chartered Accountant (2010 CICA Honour Roll) and holds a Bachelor of Accounting & Financial Management (Honours) and a Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo.

 

Alex Yanitsky
Senior Investment Analyst

Alex Yanitsky joined Teachers' Private Capital in 2012 after working in investment banking at RBC Capital Markets, Toronto and Barclays Capital, Calgary.

Alex holds a BA (Honours) from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University.
