Correction—Emergency Leaves Not Proclaimed
Two weeks ago, we sent you a pension bulletin (2001-01, ESA Amendments) concerning a number of amendments made to the Employment Standards Act (ESA). Unfortunately, we were premature in announcing the introduction of emergency leaves.
Parental Leave Extended, Emergency Leave Introduction Delayed
For births that occur on or after December 31, 2000, the parental leave maximum has been extended to 35 weeks. Mothers giving birth are now entitled to a total of 52 weeks of leave under ESA. Fathers and adoptive parents can now take an additional 19 weeks of parental leave.
The extension of parental leave was the only ESA amendment to receive official proclamation last December. Other amendments, including the introduction of emergency leaves, are expected to be officially proclaimed later this year.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will send you a new bulletin once these amendments are officially proclaimed. |
