  Teachers' Private Capital

Teachers' Private Capital is one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated pools of investment capital. It was formed in 1991 as the private investment arm of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

  Long-term horizon
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan has a responsibility to pay pensions to today's teachers for decades into the future. Consequently, we are a long-term investor, and this makes Teachers' Private Capital different from typical private equity firms. It gives us - and our partners - the flexibility to add value over a longer time frame. Our focus is on long-term value creation, not on short-term trading profits.

Being the private investment arm of a large pension fund also frees us from constraints that often restrict the amount typical private equity firms can invest in any one company or opportunity.

We specialize in providing private equity capital for large and mid-cap companies, and venture capital for developing industries.

A $17 billion global portfolio
With a portfolio of $17 billion (invested and committed), which includes our investments in private equity and venture capital, Teachers’ Private Capital invests in companies around the world seeking to grow and add value to their businesses. We search the world for direct and fund investment opportunities, putting capital to work in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.

Direct investor
Unlike most other pension funds, we lead direct investments in companies on our own. Our team of more than 50 investment professionals has the experience to originate, execute and manage large investments. Our flexibility allows us to partner with management teams, other buyout firms and pension plans.

We can also access the significant resources of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, with more than $100 billion in assets, and leverage our network of relationships for our partners’ advantage. For example, Teachers’ fixed income group often participates alongside Teachers’ Private Capital to provide senior or subordinated debt where required, allowing companies to look after both their equity and debt needs.

Agile source of capital
We generally make investments ranging from $100 million to more than $1 billion and we respond quickly to investment ideas, often providing a ‘go’ or ‘no go’ decision within one week. Our ability to respond quickly has contributed to the success of Teachers’ Private Capital.

Since 1991, we have invested in over 300 companies and have established core relationships with a select group of private equity and venture capital firms. We have built a successful track record in private equity, with returns in the range of 25% per annum.
