
Robert Bertram

Investments | Robert Bertram leads Teachers’ investment program, and has overseen the pension fund’s growth to $108.5 billion from $19 billion since it was established in 1990.
He is responsible for the pension fund’s investment activities, as well as the asset-mix and risk allocations for the total fund and the real estate portfolio managed by Teachers’ subsidiary, The Cadillac Fairview Corp.
Born and raised in Western Canada, Mr. Bertram spent 18 years at Telus Corporation, formerly Alberta Government Telephone. Before leaving, he was Assistant Vice-President and Treasurer, including responsibility for managing the company's $2 billion in investment funds.
Mr. Bertram is a CFA charterholder and a graduate of the Directors Education Program at the Institute of Corporate Directors. He holds a BA from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the University of Alberta. Mr. Bertram serves on the boards of The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Ltd., Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Canadian Public Accountability Board, and the International Centre for Pension Management. He is a member of the Investment Committee of the Toronto Community Fund, and is a past chair of the Pension Investment Association of Canada.
Mr. Bertram’s contributions to the Canadian pension fund industry and innovative fund management have been widely recognized. In 2006, he received the Top 40 Money Managers Lifetime Achievement Award from Benefits Canada magazine. In 2007, Teachers’ was named the Savviest Public Plan of the Year by Money Management Letter, and Mr. Bertram and former CEO Claude Lamoureux were honoured with the Ivey Business Leader Award for their achievements in business and corporate governance. |
